Over the past few years design, twin borthers Simon and Nikolai Haas, born in Austin, Texas, in 1984, have become a powerful force within the design world. And not only. The wonder boys of the Southern California design world, have in hand a multifaceted vision of an international appeal, targeted towards becoming some of the most innovative furniture makers around, principally stemming from their extraordinarily original set design and props for print and video, one of a kind fashion works and their highly original furniture and object designs. A creative quest in prototyping forms and experimenting with materials, surface textures and processes, “assisted” by the talented duo’s traits; a wild eye for artistry and traditional carpentry skills, which have led them in creating objects ranging from Cubist club chairs to unique brass vases and ceramic light fixtures, as well as an angel wings collaboration for the renowned Lady Gaga. Their philosophy in realizing simple but unprecedented pieces is reflected in their obsessively detailed sculptural work. Their notable Donatella Chair for Versace Home, relfects their eye for elegance, sophistication and luxury pushing and challenging the limits of design and material experimentation to a level that definitely has put them under the spotlight.
"We'll find a material we like and do everything wrong with it until something comes out right…"
Haas brothers’s often flamboyant style encompasses an experimentation with raw materials to create defying nature shape, at times with sexual references, using materials like resin, metal, fur and brass taken to an extreme level of manipulation. A verification of the above their mutant like creature ”invention” that serves both as a table or a sofa.
“We want people to feel empathy for objects, to make them funny and relatable…If there’s a weird animal in your house that happens to be a sofa, you will form a relationship with it.”
With their unconfined design aestethics and radical techniques the Haas brothers have not only created a personal and recognizable style but a world of their own; a world full of textures, materials and shapes worthy of decorating the most flamboyant house or being on the set of a Sci Fi feature.
