“Givenchy’s clothes are the only ones I feel myself in. He is more than a designer, he is a creator of personality”. - Audrey Hepburn
When you think of Hubert de Givenchy, the greatest couturier and living legend in the history of haute couture, it is inevitabile not to think of Audrey Hepburn, the Oscar winner actress and one of the leading figures of the American cinema in the fifties and sixties. Between them a deep love that began in 1953 and lasted until the demise of the actress. It started as a professional relationship and evolved as a real friendship: He became her “couturier” on the big screen and in her daily life.
Hubert de Givenchy, a tall man and grande devotee of the color black, women, the city of Paris and clean lines, fell in love with Audrey, a delicate young lady with an innate elegance and an incomparabile inner strength, became his muse.
Their story is a special one and reflects a precious spirit and timeless beauty of a unique pact of friendship and elegance.
Hepburn and Hubert’s relationship was an exemplary of true platonic love; the one that is hard to comprehend and find nowadays; the type of relationship where affection, depth, respect, admiration and truth prevails.
They have been and still are a living proof that love is not necessarily “enclosed” in marriage, instead a real connection can be rare, but once established can be timelessly alive.
Their story is sealed with “To Audrey with Love”, from November 26th till 26th March 2017, the new ambitious exhibition held at the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag museum and created hand in hand with Monsieur Givenchy himself, where the couturier pays homage to his muse.
The exhibition sheds light onto the designer’s career ( 1952 – 1995): Hubert de Givenchy has personally selected his favorite creations, some of which are shown to the public for the first time.
A great part of the exhibition depicts the unique friendship and professional collaboration between the couturier and the actress, who elevated many of her dearest friend’s influential creations in her renowned films “How to Steal a Million”, “Sabrina” and “Breakfast at Tiffany's” amongst others.
The exhibition “partners” with “To Audrey with Love” book: It deals with an enchanting collection of annotated fashion sketches by Hubert de Givenchy devoted to his great friend and muse, Audrey Hepburn.
“To Audrey with Love” is the sequel of the 1988 exhibition “Hubert de Givenchy. Haute Couture worn by Audrey Hepburn”, also held at the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag museum and attended by both the actress and the couturier himself.
"To be back in Holland is always an important moment for me and especially in order to present the exhibition To Audrey with Love, an emotional tribute to Audrey Hepburn in her native country and in the great Gemeentemuseum. I am convinced that Audrey would have been very proud and happy with this beautiful project of exhibition. We love you Audrey." - Hubert de Givenchy
